So a little exercise. Many are following Alma’s advice (Alma 32) this week to prepare your soil and make place in your heart and mind to receive a seed (general conference). If it’s a good seed it will swell, sprout and begin to grow.
So, here’s the exercise...listen to a general conference session and compare that seed to this seed entitled, “Be of Good Cheer.” Which one tastes like light and truth? Which one causes swelling motions in your heart and brings pure intelligence to your mind and heart? Joseph taught that the Holy Ghost has no other effect than pure intelligence. Which one is delicious to you? Which one sheds light on things you need to change? Pure intelligence from the Holy Ghost is not always good news. Many times it sheds light on weakness and sin or a needed course correction, which is good news but in the moment it is not always thrilling news.
Remember Alma’s advice is you cannot cast out the seed because of your unbelief. You must nurture it and give it a chance to grow. Make place in your soil for the seed. It’s tough to be neutral, I get that, but if our desires are pure and we truly are seeking the Lord and his truths, false beliefs can give way to pure light and truth.
Remember king lamoni’s dad, the king, he said basically if you are real god, will you make yourself known unto me? And I will give up all my sins to know you? Now we know he is serious. His hope in an unfamiliar god was coupled with covenanting by sacrifice to know the Lord. That is powerful.
Remember Joseph, he asked that he might know which church to join. He was fully committed to the answer, even though he didn’t know the answer. God knew Joseph would act on the answer given. Therefore, he gave him an answer. This helps us measure our sincerity and real intent. Are we willing to act on the answer no matter what it is?
